Climate Change Adaptability of cropping and Farming systems for Europe

The ERA-Net European Climate-CAFE project brings together twelve multidisciplinary research teams, from nine different European countries engaged in a common research project which aims at analyzing the effects of climate change on the crop production in Europe and assesses ex ante the efficacy of adaptation measures. This work is based on participative approaches in relationships with 10 farmers groups and advisors organized in “adaptation pilots” covering the diversity of European climates. This collaboration should enable both to facilitate the knowledge exchanges between farmers and researchers, in order to elaborate possible adaptation measures and to make a first assessment of the climate change effects on European agricultural production. The relative efficiency of these adaptation strategies will be analyzed by their long term simulations and multi-criteria assessments at both field plot and farm levels. Among the models selected to perform these simulations, the STICS soil-crop model will be used to evaluate the cropping systems in different pedoclimatic contexts (from South Spain to Finland) based on two IPCC climatic scenarios (RCP 4.5 and 8.5).
