C-TROPIC Project: Role of Amazonian Aquatic Ecosystems in the Carbon Cycle

The objective of the C-TROPIC project led by the Recover unit of the Aix-en-Provence site is to improve knowledge of the functioning of Amazonian aquatic ecosystems in order to better understand the global carbon balance of the planet. Public policies will be able to use the project's conclusions to implement energy strategies that emit less GHG and thus reduce our impact on the climate.

RECOVER

The UMR RECOVER is a joint unit of INRAE / Aix-Marseille University focused on the functioning of ecosystems and natural hazards. Its objectives are :

  • on the one hand, to develop regional knowledge for risks related to fire, hydrology, the proper functioning of hydraulic structures, as well as decision support in this field
  • on the other hand, to study the dynamics of aquatic and forest ecosystems under the constraint of global change, the problem of ecosystem restoration and to develop tools and methods for assessing the state of ecosystems.

Global change, multi-hazard or risk management on a territorial scale and compatibility with ecosystem protection are cross-cutting issues for the UMR. RECOVER contributes to the INRAE / OFB (French Office for Biodiversity) national "Lake Ecosystems" cluster and hosts three OFB agents. RECOVER has a strong activity in the field of expertise, particularly in the field of hydraulic structures. The work is based on laboratories (geomechanics/geosynthetics, forest ecology and hydrobiology laboratories, fish breeding units in controlled environments, mesocosms) and field sites (experimental dikes, Réal Collobrier, FontBlanche, Barbentane and Saint Mitre sites, Bimont and Zola reservoirs).
