We have explored, through modelling approaches, the consequences at the agricultural landscape scale of the virus evolutionary mechanisms measured at the individual plant scale.

Our aim was to compare three main strategies of management of major resistance genes in terms of efficiency and durability, and in terms of optimality conditions:

  1. the pyramiding of resistance genes in the same cultivar
  2. the spatial deployment of resistant and susceptible cultivars in fields
  3. the inter-annual (i.e. through rotations) deployment of resistant and susceptible cultivars in fields.

We have shown that the efficiency and optimality conditions of these strategies depended greatly on the capacity of the virus to overcome the resistance and on the predominant virus infection routes in the landscape.
