I will present the work i developed on cytochrome P450 in arthropods in the last decade. Cytochrome P450s (CYPs) are a large superfamily of enzymes that has been identified in all domains of life. They are involved in the metabolism of multiple substrates such as hormone synthesis, development, detoxification. In herbivorous insects, CYP are involved in detoxification of plant secondary metabolites. CYPs are also involved in tolerance to pesticides. I will compare CYP composition between 3 polyphagous lepidopterans from the Spodoptera complex, that are important agronomical pests. There are numerous CYP families with few members and few families with large expansion of CYP members. I will illustrate gene family expansion with the case of the sub-family CYP9A.
