Classical biological control against the chestnut gall wasp Dryocosmus kuriphilus (Hymenoptera, Cynipidae) in France (RDLB)

Dryocosmus kuriphilus is an exotic gall wasp threatening the chestnut trees both in cultivated orchards as well as in forests. Its main observed and/or suspected impacts are both the reduction of fruit production, the decrease of honey production and soil erosion. Within this frame, the exotic biological control agent Torymus sinensis was introduced in more than 60 locations within a geographical area encompassing more than half of the continental part of France as well as Corsica. The biocontrol agent seems to have established in most of the cases (>75%), a very positive result with regard to the few number of introduced individuals (≤ 100). The next steps will be to monitor its demography and its expected impacts on the chestnut gallwasp and to understand ecological consequences linked to the spread of the two species (pest and biocontrol agent).
