Easy access to microsatellite markers thanks to a new setup method available through a commercial service co-developed by Inra. (BPI Team)

The study of the living organism genetics requires markers providing data about the structure and the evolutionary history of populations. Microsatellites are recognized as choice markers but their use was limited for a long time by the practical difficulty of their development. The Ecomicro project, coordinated by the team BPI and involving more than 150 European scientists, has developed a procedure allowing the high-throughput production of microsatellite markers at a reduced cost. The method has been validated by the consortium Ecomicro on a wide range of organisms (plants, animals, fungi) and has allowed the production of more than 150 microsatellite DNA libraries of several thousand sequences. Furthermore, this project has leaded to the launching on the market of a service proposed by the French company Genoscreen allowing obtaining microsatellite DNA libraries by simply sending DNA samples.
