"Development of bioactive molecules for the sustainable control of coffee pests"

03 February 2023

Sophia Antipolis - INRAE PACA - A010 - Video conferencing

As part of the ISA scientific animation, we will have the pleasure to have a seminar of Erika Albuquerque, guest researcher of the ID team, on Friday at 11am on the following theme :

Abstract :

Leucoptera coffeella (Guerin-Meneville, 1842) is a species of moth (Lepidoptera) that causes serious losses to coffee crops. Despite crop damage in Brazil and other producing and exporting countries, little information on the coffee leaf miner (CFL) is available for the development of bioinsecticide strategies and the management of resistance to conventional insecticides. At Embrapa, together with collaborators and partners, we work with advanced technologies to improve the health of the coffee tree with more safe and cost-effective products to the human health and environment. To generate molecular tools to this insect and other lepidopteran pests, our research group generated various information on the CLM, from its biology to complete genomic sequencing: determination of immature stages, differentiation adult sex, cytometry and karyogram, long-read genome, transcriptome, proteome, molecular markers of insecticide resistance and dsRNA for silencing strategies.

Additionally, based on the chemistry of natural products, that has a direct link with the enhancement of biodiversity and is linked to several fields of knowledge, we explore a scientific field that allows the discovery of new bioactive molecules. At Embrapa Tropical Agroindustry in Fortaleza – Brazil, we develop new molecules from natural products with fungicide and insecticide potential application through bioinformatics.

Following Erika's presentation, Natália Florêncio Martins, Pesquisadora - Embrapa Agroindústria Tropical, Lab. Multiusuário de Química de Produtos Naturais (https://www.embrapa.br/agroindustria-tropical/infraestrutura/lmqpn), will give a brief presentation on:
The chemistry of natural products has a direct link to the valorization of biodiversity and is related to several areas of knowledge. It is a scientific field that allows the discovery of new bioactive molecules. This presentation will show the contribution of Embrapa Agro Industrie Tropical, in Brazil, to the innovation of products derived from natural products and the role of bioinformatics in the development of new fungicides and insecticides.

The seminar can be attended in person in room A010 or by video:
