Eggplant CIRAD + privé n°2 (2019 - 2021)

Genetic mapping of resistance to bacterial wilt of eggplant accession E9

The durability of varietal resistance to Ralstonia solanacearum species complex (RSSC) is hampered by the bacterial huge genetic diversity (3 species, 4 phylogenetic groups). For eggplant, CIRAD-INRA results of the last ten years suggest a specific interaction between the resistance locus EBWR9 and the type III avirulence factor ripAX2. In order to identify other major resistance genetic factors, effective against strains uncontrolled by EBWR9, a doubled haploid (DH) population was created from an F1 between the resistant accession (E9) and a susceptible control (E8). The objectives of the collaborative research are:

   i) to identify and to characterize RSSC strains in Asia where the disease is prevalent;

  ii) to phenotype the DH population in multiple locations (La Reunion and Asia), and to identify new QTL of resistance by Genotyping-By-Sequencing (GBS).

 iii) to develop molecular markers strongly linked to the new QTLs, and to estimate the feasibility of their use in breeding programs aimed at pyramiding resistance QTLs for the creation of cultivars resistant to a broad range of RSSC strains.
