Some Lactuca genotypes resistant to root-knot Nematodes : hope for lettuce culture in Provence

Lactumel Project

To offer some solution to the lost in lettuce culture in soil contaminated by root-knot nematode, the LactuMel project (partnership with 2 breeder companies and 3 technical institutes, on 2014-2016), financed by CASDAR and supported by GIS PicLeg, allowed to identify parents of resistance in Lactuca genetic resources of  GAFL. The best parents in our tests (few or absence of eggs on the roots of young plants inoculated in pots) belong to compatible wild Lactuca species. They are resistant to both species of the most frequent Meloidogyne in Provence (M. incognita and M. arenaria). The first studies of the genetic determinism of the resistance to M. incognita allow to propose simple hypotheses for resistance in 3 cultivars as well in one L. serriola. Controls in naturally contaminated grounds showed the interest of some genotypes. These results must be completed by other studies to choose the best parents for breeding program of resistant varieties. More details  in https://www6.inra.fr/ciag/Revue/Volumes-publies-en-2018/
