Résumé: Biophysical variables are more and more used in several applications both at global and regional scales for biogeochemical cycle studies (mainly carbon and water), interaction between surface and atmosphere for climate modelling and resource evaluation and management (agriculture, forestry, early warning ...). They may be also very pertinent for the monitoring of vegetation phenology and detection of anomalies. For most of these applications, long and consistent time series are required. Such time series are currently developed under the GEOLAND2 project mainly based on AVHRR before 1999, and then VEGETATION sensors. However, there is a need for continuity, and if possible improvements mainly from the spatial resolution. The PROBA-V appears to be the obvious candidate for pursuing the time series after the VEGETATION sensors era, while providing improved spatial resolution.

The objectives of this project are to develop LAI, FAPAR and FCOVER products from PROBAV as consistent as possible with GEOLAND2 V1 products that have been proven the most accurate available global products. These products are envisioned to populate the (GIO) GMES Initial Operation within the LMCS (Land Monitoring Core Service). The products will be derived after using machine learning systems using PROBA-V at 300 m top of atmosphere reflectance as inputs and GEOLAND2 V1 products as outputs. The PROBA-V data will be simulated using MERIS FR (300m) resolution data for 2 consecutive years (2006-2007). The PROBA-V products will be evaluated according to the CEOS/LPV guidelines. The interest of the improved spatial resolution will be evaluated as compared to the 1km resolution based on few key applications including agriculture.
